Vader Mulls $6.8M Sewer Upgrade
By Marlea Hanson, staff writer
VADER — The engineering firm Civil West met with the Vader city council on Feb. 9 to answer questions regarding a proposed low-pressure collection system to replace existing sewer lines.
Preliminary costs for the collection system are projected at approximately $6.8 million, with $3.7 million for the system, plus an additional $3 million for administrative overhead and public power including electrical wiring, connections and panels. The proposed estimate for collection system improvements does not include an upgrade to city’s lagoon wastewater treatment plant.
Civil West regional manager Matt Wadlington said individual pump stations can be installed at each residence and the city can decide whether the pumps will be connected to individual home electrical panels or connected to a central, city-owned electrical service. In the first option, homeowners would bear the cost of electrical service to the pumps (about 10 cents a day), while the second option would have the city pay electrical costs and then pass the costs on to users through their water/sewer bill.
“The difference in these two options is about $1 million in construction and design costs,” Wadlington told the Tribune. “In both options, the City would own the pump stations and would be responsible for the maintenance of them. Having a new pressure collection system would mean that the treatment upgrade costs would be much lower. Whether it makes it enough lower to offset the costs of the collection system is the question we’re currently working on.”
